Fitler Square New Construction

In the tight-knit fabric of Philadelphia rowhouses, it is uncommon to find a property that stands alone, untouched by neighbors. But a rare opportunity gave InHabit, Inc the freedom to design a new home on such a lot in Fitler Square. After demolishing two 2-story rowhouses and combining properties, this homeowner had a unique site and the desire to build modern but without disrupting the visual fabric of the block.
inHabit took cues from the nearly square site plan and created a building block of 3D volumes that started to form a cube when stacked. Some of the volumes are represented on the exterior – such as the band of windows conveying the view across the Schuylkill and the stair tower. At other times inHabit carved away at the cube – for a Roof Terrace to the Center City skyline or window to capture Southern light. Windows sit back from the brick face, and occasionally combine wrapping corners, to further enhance the visual of a simple cube unmarred by the fussiness of details.
The interior is similarly serene in its perceived simplicity. However tightly planned detailing and material selections are behind the tranquil appearance. Soft white finishes and white oak are used throughout the house to provide a restful environment one stoop away from a vibrant city sidewalk.
